Start or resume AFS licence application

Before you start your application

Take the time to read the AFS Licensing Kit:

Part 1

Applying for and varying an AFS licence. Read this for an overview of the application process.

Part 2

Preparing your AFS licence or variation application. This helps you answer the questions in the application form and prepare your 'core' proofs. You must lodge all your core proofs promptly after submitting your online application. The application should not be submitted until all supporting proofs are available. Copies of all core proofs can be scanned and emailed to ASIC to licensing.afslproofs@asic.gov.au quoting the applicant's name and application reference number in the title of the email.

Part 3

Preparing your additional proofs. This explains any additional proof documents you might be asked to provide. To save time and expense, please do not prepare any additional proofs until we request these from you, as additional proofs may not be required.

You can familiarise yourself with the AFS licence application by reading our sample online application. The sample application shows all the possible questions and outcomes that the eLicensing system is capable of. You won’t be asked all these questions because the eLicensing system tailors your application to your business.

Getting your application accepted quickly

To make sure that your application is assessed as quickly as possible it is important that the information you supply to us is correct and complete, and that your core proofs are lodged promptly after submitting the online application. If your application does not meet our requirements it could be returned to you, or refused or there could be substantial delays while we seek further information from you.

We've issued many other documents to help you. You will find references to these in the AFS Licensing Kit. You can download copies of them as PDF files.

Applicants to which specific financial requirements apply

Please ensure that you refer to Regulatory Guide 166 Licensing: Financial requirements (RG 166), including the relevant appendix that applies to you, if you are a:

  • operator of Investor directed portfolio services

  • custodial or depository services provider (including as a provider of incidental custody services)

  • trustee company providing traditional services

  • issuer of margin lending facilities

RG 166 sets out in detail the financial requirements that apply to licensees who provide financial services in the above areas. Please ensure that you understand your obligations to comply with these financial requirements before you start your application.
