How to renew a business name

Once you receive your renewal notice, you can renew your business name registration using ASIC Connect. Your renewal notice will contain the unique number for your business name, called the ASIC key.

You must sign up for an ASIC Connect account before you can renew your business name. You may have already done this if you have updated your business name details with ASIC.

Once you have an ASIC Connect account, you can renew, update, cancel or transfer your business name.
  1. Log into ASIC Connect Opens new window by selecting the Log in button or create an ASIC Connect account by selecting the 'Sign up' button.

  2. Use your ASIC key, provided in the renewal notice, to link your business name to your account.
  3. From the 'Lodgements & Notifications' tab in ASIC Connect, select your business name and start a 'renewal' transaction. ASIC Connect will give you the following payment options:
    • Pay online by credit card – select ‘Pay now’.
    • Pay by BPAY – select ‘Pay later’ and we will show you our biller code and your customer reference number, just write them down and pay through your financial institution.
    • Pay by invoice – select ‘Pay later’ and we will email you an invoice within 48 hours. You cannot view the invoice in ASIC Connect.

If you select to 'Pay later' by BPAY or invoice, please allow 2 business days for payment processing.

Want to request an invoice?

If you have received your business name renewal notice and still wish to have an invoice, you can either request one by emailing us or by going online at ASIC Connect.

We have set up a dedicated email address just for these requests. Send the following information to renew@asic.gov.au:
We will email your invoice within 3-5 days. This may take longer if we need to contact you to clarify any details.

Any other inquiries should be directed to www.asic.gov.au/question.

Renewal period and fees

You will need to elect whether to renew your business name registration for a further one or three years. A discounted annual registration renewal fee applies when you register for three years.
Once your business name renewal has been processed, you cannot change the registration period. You will need to wait until the current registration period ends.

Confirming your renewal

We will update the register once we process the payment of your renewal fee. The time this will take will depend on the payment method you use.
It may take between 2-5 business days for your payment to be processed.

We will send confirmation of your successful registration renewal and a record of registration for the business name to the email address.

There is no requirement to display a certificate of registration for the business name. However, we have designed the first page of the record of registration to look like a certificate so that you can display it if you wish.

If you wish to receive your record of registration again, please contact us.

You will also be able to see your new registration expiry date on the business names register using ASIC Connect.

Registrations that have not been renewed

You can still renew your business name using ASIC Connect if you have received your renewal notice and the renewal due date has passed.

For more information see ASIC-initiated cancellation of a business name about why and when we may cancel a business name.

State and territory business name renewals (Pre-28 May 2012)

If you received a renewal notice from a state or territory agency, you should have paid the associated fee to them.

If you have not paid the renewal fee, your business name registration may have been cancelled by your state or territory agency.

We encourage you to conduct a search on the business names register to see if your business name is still registered.

If your registration has been cancelled and you still wish to trade under the name, you will need to re-register, but we cannot guarantee the name will be available.
