Social networking websites - take care Did you know that social networking websites like Facebook could be used by fraudsters to steal your identity? Find out how to protect yourself. |
How to protect yourself1. Think about the personal information you are displaying Do you display information that may make you vulnerable? (e.g. your address, date of birth, your schedule or routine) 2. Manage your public messages Make sure you delete old messages, and only put information up that you don't mind if people see (eg. Blogs, Wallpapers, chat rooms) 3. Be wary of people you don't know The Internet makes it easier for people to pretend to be someone they're not, and disguise their motives. Be careful who you talk to and how much information about yourself you give them. 4. Be a sceptic Don't believe everything you read. People might not be honest, whether for malicious reasons, or as a joke. Try to verify the accuracy of any information. 5. Check privacy policies Some sites may share your email address or personal preferences with businesses, meaning more spam, or they may sign your friends up for spam also. Check it out.
