Update your business name details
Once you have signed up and linked your business name to your ASIC Connect account, you can view your business name details. Business name information can be located under the ‘Lodgements & Notifications’ tab and include:
- business addresses
- holder details
- partner details (this will only be shown for holders that are partnerships or joint venture partnerships), and
- representatives.
You can also:
You must ensure that the information in the business name register is correct and up-to-date, with ASIC being notified within 28 days of the change.
Information that is not visible on the public register includes birth details and email addresses for any individuals recorded against the business name.
If your residential address is identical to the address for service of documents, then your residential address will be publicly accessible through the business name register. If you do not want your residential address to appear on the register, you may need to consider appointing a third party to receive service documents on your behalf, for example, an accountant, solicitor or family member.

If you have checked the business name register and identified that information such as an address or any other information needs to be updated or added, use ASIC Connect to change these details.
If the entity that holds the business name changes, you must lodge an application to cancel the business name and transfer it to the new holder. Once the application has been accepted we will issue the consent to transfer number to you. You need to provide the proposed business name holder with the consent to transfer number to enable them to register the business name.
When applying for registration the proposed holder needs to provide a new ABN and the consent to transfer number for the new entity. Examples of possible changes are:
- The holder sells the business and the business name to somebody else.
- If removing partners from a partnership results in one remaining partner, then the business name holder is now an individual not a partnership.
- If an individual running a business sets up a trust to run the business, then the holder becomes a trust not an individual.
- If a change in partners of a partnership isn’t permitted in the partnership agreement, then a new partnership under a new agreement would result. This is a different entity than originally registered the business name.

Trading names - Information on the Australian Business Register
Businesses that applied for an ABN before 28 May 2012 were able to provide the Australian Business Register (ABR) with a trading name. This trading name will be displayed by ABN Lookup
until mid-2014.
In accordance with the law, the ABR no longer collects or updates trading names. From 1 July 2014, ABN Lookup will stop displaying all trading names and only display registered business names.
The ABR is separate to the business names register.
If you have a query relating to a trading name on the ABN, further details are available at www.abr.gov.au
