Cyber threat landscape
Cyber threats are continuously evolving, fuelled by technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, and influenced by changing geopolitical dynamics.
As digital services become more interconnected, the increasing sophistication and frequency of cyber-attacks have the potential to cause widespread disruption and damage.
Common threats
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is constantly monitoring Australia’s rapidly evolving threat landscape.
Each year, the ASD publishes its threat report on the current and emerging threats affecting Australian businesses and organisations, critical infrastructure, and individuals.
- Common threats include business email compromise, ransomware attacks, data theft, vulnerabilities in ICT supply chains, the increased use of AI, cloud security issues, and the security of edge devices.
- Threats from state-based actors, whose techniques are constantly evolving, and hacktivists, who leverage the widespread reliance on the internet, social media, and other forms of digital communication, are also on the rise.
Good cyber security is not a one-time effort. As adversaries continuously evolve, entities are encouraged to:
- stay informed about the changing threat landscape
- ensure that emerging cyber risks are integrated into their risk management framework
- ensure their cyber defences are continuously updated
- ensure they are prepared with plans and capabilities to respond to and recover from cyber incidents, including plans for business continuity, disaster recovery and crisis communications.
