04-009 ASIC appoints Executive Director Enforcement
Thursday 15 January 2004
Mr Jeffrey Lucy, acting Chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), today announced the appointment of Ms Jan Redfern as Executive Director Enforcement.
Ms Redfern takes over the position following the retirement of Mr Peter Wood, who held the position from March 2001.
Ms Redfern has been Deputy Executive Director Enforcement since July 2001 and from 1999 she was General Counsel for ASIC's New South Wales regional office. Ms Redfern brings more than 20 years experience in the law to the Executive Director's role, having worked in both private legal practice and the public service.
Ms Redfern was a partner of the national law firm Hunt and Hunt for 10 years, specialising in litigation and dispute resolution. She has also served on a number of professional committees of the Law Society of New South Wales.
Ms Redfern has been responsible for overseeing major litigation and investigations and has been instrumental in high profile enforcement outcomes, including proceedings involving former directors of HIH and OneTel.
‘Jan brings outstanding skills, broad experience and an intimate knowledge of ASIC to her new role. We are extremely fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Jan to take on this important function’, Mr Lucy said.
Mr Lucy also announced that Mr Wood had accepted a new, part-time role as special enforcement counsel.
‘I would like to thank Peter Wood for the valuable contribution he has made over the past three years. I am also delighted that he will continue his association with ASIC in a new capacity and I look forward to working with him.’
